THE PROBLEM:

We have a water closet (toilet room) in our master bathroom.

Since our vanity in the main bathroom, it isn’t easy to reach extra toilet paper or feminine products.

So I started researching ways to add storage to our water closet without buying an over the toilet organizer. We don’t need to store that much in the toilet room, just a few small things. An over the toilet organizer or cabinet would be overkill.

Instead, I decided to do open shelving above the toilet!

  1. Buy two shelves

I went to Lowes because I had good luck with their floating shelves for our bar cart recently.

This time, I picked out Allen + Roth Natural 24-in L x 7.8-in D Wood Bracket Shelf for $30 each.

You can also buy open shelves or floating shelves as well. Any wall mounted shelf would work.

2. install the shelves

These were pretty easy to install! I did it by myself and only needed, a measuring tape, a level, a drill, and dry wall anchors. The kit came with 2 dry wall anchors for each shelf but I put 4 for extra support.

How high up should you install floating shelves above the toilet?

I measured 24 inches above the toilet so that we wouldn’t hit our heads on the bottom shelf.

I then measured my basket and made sure that there was enough room to restock the bottom shelf without bumping into the upper shelf.

3. organize your toilet paper and bathroom products into baskets

I had these baskets from our old house and I found them at TJ Maxx for $8 each.

Where do you find wicker storage baskets?

You can also find a lot of basket options at Hobby Lobby, HomeGoods, TJ Maxx and At Home.

In the bottom basket, I organized feminine products such as tampons and pads.

In the upper basket, I created a tower of toilet paper so that it was easy to refill the toilet paper holder. Now we have no excuses.
