You don’t eat out anymore, so your sink is full of dishes.

You only wear workout clothes, so you are always doing laundry.

The front door is blocked by boxes because online shopping is your new hobby.

You don’t follow your normal cleaning routine because no one is coming over.

how it all started

A couple months into the global pandemic, I find out that we are moving out of state for my husband’s job. I didn’t want to have any strangers in my house so I didn’t want to hire a cleaning company to help with any deep cleaning. I decided that I was going to do it myself.

I wanted the buyers touring our home to see how clean it was and to give them peace of mind.

I started with our bedroom, how dirty could it be?

Disturbingly dirty. Who knew that dust could sit on walls and lightbulbs? I never noticed these things living at home but the thought of someone else coming into our home, analyzing our house, opened my eyes to the mess.

When you are home all day for months on end and no one comes over, your normal cleaning routines go out the window. There is no incentive to clean. So after a few months of staying at home, it was time to give the house a deep clean.

Once I realized how dirty our house had gotten during quarantine, I started to feel overwhelmed that it would take me weeks to deep clean all of it. I didn’t have the luxury of taking my time when deep cleaning my house. I needed to do it quickly, efficiently and in the simplest way possible.

The idea of cleaning the entire house overwhelmed me so I started with one room, our master bedroom.

lesson learned

Imagine yourself having multiple offers on your home, over asking price because you put in the effort to deep clean your house.

Your house will stand out to the buyers when it is cleaner than the other homes on the market.

When buyers want a home that feels clean and is move in ready, they will offer over asking price to beat their competition.

Fun fact: At the closing, the buyer’s real estate agent told us that our house was in the top 10 cleanest houses he has ever seen.

My bedroom speed clean process

First, remind yourself that you never have to deep clean this house again.

Second, gather the supplies.

Third, dedicate a time in your schedule to make to happen. Don’t just leave it on the to do list. Pick a time when you work best.

Let’s Begin

You will start from the top of the room and finish with the floors. If you start on the floors and work up, you will need to clean the floorboards again after all of the dust settles. This process is designed so that you don’t have to repeat any tasks.

  1. Wipe the smoke detector of any dust.

  2. Catch any cobwebs in the corners of the room, where the ceiling meets the walls.

  3. Get on a ladder or chair (safely) and wipe down the light, lightbulbs and fan.

  4. Grab your favorite window cleaner and wipe the inside of the windows. If you have any mirrors in your bedroom, don’t forget to wipe them as well.

  5. Run a microfiber cloth over the top of the door frame and then the door itself.

  6. For the walls, wipe all of the outlet covers and light switches.

  7. If you have any curtain rods or return vents on the walls, you can dust it now as well.

  8. Wipe any furniture in the room with your favorite cleaner or polish. For our bed, I used a wet microfiber cloth but for the nightstands, I used Clorox.

  9. Run a paper towel or clean cloth along the top of the baseboards. I found an extraordinary amount of dust sitting on top of the baseboards that I never noticed.

  10. Now you can vacuum your rugs, sweep and mop the floors.

  11. Lastly, wipe the floor registers from any dirt or dust that has settled from your cleaning.

Now, print off your cleaning checklist so that you can increase your chances of selling your home quickly and for profit.

tips

  • Deep clean weeks before your listing pictures are taken. First, you don’t want any strong odors lingering from your cleaning products during showings. Second, the house will not get dusty enough that you will need to repeat any of these cleaning tasks. You can do a quick clean the day before.

  • Don’t try to get motivated by watching Youtube videos, just get started.

  • Tell yourself, “this is the last time that I am deep cleaning this house, ever!”
