  3. Measure the drawer.

  4. Add a shelf liner.

  5. Buy shallow plastic drawer organizers.

the before

My husband and I decided to use the small counter space to the left of the pantry as our DIY coffee bar. We have coffee cups and mugs in the cabinet above and tea bags and Keurig K-cups in the drawer.

(The Keurig and tea kettle were not pictured because I was washing both when I started organizing the tea drawer.)

THE PROBLEM

Without intentionally organizing the tea drawer, it became so chaotic that I had a hard time finding a specific type of teabag I wanted.

THE GOAL

I wanted to organize my tea and K-cup drawer in a way that made it easy and quick for my husband and me to find the kind of tea that we were craving.

  1. Remove everything in the kitchen drawer.

I started by removing all of the miscellaneous tea bags and half-empty tea boxes.

Our drawer is pretty shallow so it was also hard to fit in tea boxes without crushing the top.

2. Clean the space.

I wiped down the drawer but it was hardly dirty because most of our teas are individually wrapped so there wasn’t a huge mess.

3. Measure the space.

4. Add a shelf liner.

Even though the tea drawer doesn’t get dirty, I wanted the clear plastic trays to have a clean white background instead of the yellowish wood on the inside of the cabinet.

I buy plain white cabinet liner from Walmart and it’s only about $6 for a roll.

5. Buy shallow plastic drawer organizers.

With the size of my drawer, I sketched out that I need 1/4 of the drawer to be designated space for the Keurig K-cups and the other 3/4 reserved for tea bags.

I started out by going to HomeGoods and TJ Maxx but they didn’t have any of these shallow drawer organizers when I went. I love both of these stores but if you go in looking for something specific, you will never find it.

So I found what I was looking for at the Container Store.

This larger plastic tea tray is 2 inches tall, 3 inches wide, and 12 inches long. It cost $5.50.

The smaller plastic tea tray is 2 inches tall, 3 inches wide, and 9 inches long. It cost $5.00.

6. Arrange in a grid pattern.

My husband and I both make coffee in the morning using the Keurig so I wanted the K-cups front and center in the tea drawer. Easy to reach and quick to grab.

I placed four of the 9 inch long trays horizontally so that we could reach the K-cups quickly in the morning.

We both drink multiple cups of tea throughout the day so the tea went behind the coffee. I used six 12 inch plastic organizers stacked vertically so that we could read the tea bag variety.
