how to clean the bathroom in 11 steps

how it all started

A couple months into the global pandemic, I find out that we are moving out of state for my husband’s job. I didn’t want to have any strangers in my house so I didn’t want to hire a cleaning company to help with any deep cleaning. I decided that I was going to do it myself.

When you are home all day for months on end and no one comes over, your normal cleaning routines go out the window. There is no incentive to clean. So, after a few months of staying at home, it was time to give the bathroom a deep clean.

The thought of someone else coming into our home, analyzing our house, opened my eyes to the amount of grime in our bathroom.

It’s hard to make a bathroom feel clean but it’s really important for buyers touring the home to not see the cleanliness of the bathroom as a red flag.

So how could I deep clean the bathroom in the simplest, fastest way possible?

After deep cleaning two bathrooms in our home, this is what I figured out. The checklist below is the result of my trial and error.

My 10 step cleaning process

First, remind yourself that you never have to deep clean this house again.

Second, gather the supplies.

Third, dedicate time in your schedule to make it happen. Don’t just leave it on the to-do list. Pick a time when you work best.

Let’s Begin

You will start from the top of the room and finish with the floors. If you start on the floors and work up, you will need to clean the floorboards again after all of the dust settles. This process is designed so that you don’t have to repeat any tasks.

CEILING

(Get on a ladder or chair safely.)

Wipe the bathroom fan grille and light lens of any dust. If possible, remove the plastic grille and wash the dirt and dust under water.

Remove any cobwebs in the corners of the bathroom, where the ceiling meets the walls.

DOOR

Run a microfiber cloth over the top of the door frame.

Check the hinges for layers of dust.

Wipe the door itself, along with the door handle.

SHOWER

Wash the shower with a sponge and your favorite cleaning product. Don’t forget to change our the shower curtain liner if it needs to be replaced.

WALLS

Wipe the tops of outlet covers and light switches.

If the bathroom has tile on the walls, take a sponge and wash anything visible.

DECOR

Dust any shelving unit or décor items.

LIGHT

Wipe down the light and lightbulbs.

MIRROR

Clean the mirror with your favorite glass cleaner.

VANITY

Clean the vanity inside and out.

TOILET

Wash the toilet.

FLOORS

Run a paper towel or clean cloth along the top of the baseboards.

Now you can vacuum your rugs, sweep and mop the floors.

Lastly, wipe the floor registers from any dirt or dust that has settled from your cleaning.
