THE PROBLEM

Our bathroom vanity has three drawers in between my cabinet and my husband's cabinet. These drawers are narrow and very deep so organizing them is a little bit of a challenge. I originally just threw my beauty products and hair accessories in the deep drawers but then I would spend time every morning looking for a specific item.

THE GOAL = to save time in the morning

I wanted to be able to open the cabinet or drawer and know where each item was. I didn’t want to waste my time looking for specific items. Ultimately, I wanted the bathroom vanity organized so that I could get ready quicker in the morning.

the before

  1. Remove everything.

I first removed everything we had in the bathroom vanity and laid it all out on the floor in our master bathroom.

When you have an empty space, you can visualize how much space you are actually working with.

  2. Lay down cabinet liners if there is a chance of spills.

For my husband’s cabinet, I organized his stuff into two categories, hair care, and oral care.

Since any liquid can leak, I decided to lay down a white cabinet liner that I found at Walmart. This way if there are any leaks in the future, it will be easier to clean up.

I also put down a cabinet liner for my beauty products drawer.

  3. Categorize your items.

My husband’s cabinet:

  • Haircare

  • Oral care

Supplies: 2 white baskets that I bought at TJ Maxx years ago

TIP: Buying hairspray, mouthwash, and toothpaste at Sam’s Club or Costco will save you money over the long run.

1st Drawer:

  • Toothbrushes

  • Toothpaste

  • Floss

  • Floss picks

Supplies: clear, shallow drawer organizers from the Container Store, $4-$5 each

2nd Drawer:

  • Beauty Products

  • Skincare

  • Face Masks

  • Deodorant

  • Q Tips

  • Cotton Rounds

Supplies: white, shallow drawer organizers from the Container Store, $8 for a pack

3rd Drawer:

  • Hair accessories

  • Hair ties

  • Hair clips

  • Bobby pins

  • Hair curling clips

  • Hair parting clips

  • Extra bobby pins

Supplies: white, shallow drawer organizers from the Container Store, $8 for a pack

My cabinet:

  • Hair products

  • Brushes

  • Headbands

  • Hair tools

Supplies: Elfa pull-out drawer $19 each + bracket $15 each from the Container Store

4. Install pull-out drawers.

If you’re going to live in your current place for more than a year, I would invest in a pull-out drawer.

I spend time every morning getting ready and when I can pull out my hair tools and hair products, it’s easier to grab exactly what I need and put it back in the exact same spot.

If you’re renting your place right now, you can use a regular basket and it works just the same.
